    "abstract" : "Adaptive capacity is often related to responding to the impacts of climate change, including the intensification of droughts. Despite the growing interest in the subject, there is still no clarity on how this concept relates to drought in different contexts. In order to fill this gap, this article aims to understand how and which concepts of adaptive capacity have been used in the specific field of drought management, as well as the relationship between adaptive capacity and other associated concepts. Given the breadth of the field, the research contributes to expanding the availability of established academic references to support discussions and practical applications of the concept, especially in water management. Through a systematic literature review, 89 articles dated between 2001 and 2023 were selected and analyzed. These articles were retrieved from the SCOPUS and Web of Science databases in both English and Portuguese languages. The findings show that the concept of adaptive capacity did not incorporate specificities related to drought events. There was a high diversity of theoretical and methodological approaches, particularly regarding the determinants of adaptive capacity, and a growing interest in regions with temperate and tropical climates. Approaches related to adaptive capacity (AC) were freely organized into four groupings: AC as a central concept, AC & vulnerability, AC & resilience, and AC & water management. We understand that the concept of AC could leverage the specificities of drought by incorporating some insights: i) be approached as specifically as possible; ii) consider interrelations with broader levels of management and governance; and iii) promote mechanisms for social learning and flexibility.",
