Modelling and Measuring the Performance of Textured Front Surfaces under Diffuse Radiation

The positive effect of textured front side encapsulants on the performance of solar modules can be identified for direct radiation in outdoor measurements [1, 2] and in flasher measurements [3]. However, to simulate the total increase in energy yield that can be achieved over a year by the implementation of different front side textures, it is necessary to understand their performance under diffuse light conditions. Today there is no test method available to measure the performance of solar modules under diffuse light conditions. Two different setups are proposed in this research project. To evaluate these setups, two different textures were measured indoors and outdoors. One of the textures was produced in a 3D printer to evaluate the option for rapid prototyping. None of the setups could fully reproduce the diffuse light performance measured outside.
